The Cinco Banderas Collection
About the Collection
The Cinco Banderas Collection was conceived and founded through the
generosity and
efforts of a single Northwest Florida family dedicated to the arts. The
permanent collection,
established through the Arts Council of Northwest Florida, is exhibited in
appropriate
public locations. The Cinco Banderas Collection is made possible through an
endowment
fund established to support outstanding individual artists, and to provide
funds for
non-traditional arts programs in Northwest Florida. Major funding has been
provided by
the Florida Arts Council/Division of Cultural Affairs, and by donors to the
United Arts Funds
of the Arts Council of Northwest Florida.
About our
2007 Juror:
Sam Kates
Sam Kates retired in 2002 after over 30 years as a director
of museums in Florida, Tennessee and Alabama. He was
the founding director of the Wiregrass Museum of Art in Dothan, Alabama,
from 1988 to 2002. He has served on the
Alabama Museum Association’s executive committee, as a board member and past
president of the Historic
Chattahoochee Commission, and as a founding board member and past president
of the Southeast Alabama Arts
Council. He has juried and judged fine arts festivals, exhibitions and
competitions throughout the Southeast, including
events for the Huntsville Museum of Art, Montgomery Museum of Art, Mobile
Museum of Art and Visual Arts
Center of Northwest Florida. He is an alumnus of Florida State University
with a degree in Constructive Design.
Since retirement, he has enjoyed painting the disappearing "Old Florida"
coastline of the panhandle and has exhibited
his work in many art festivals and galleries from Destin to Cedar Key. He
now lives and works in St. Joe Beach, Florida.
